Cancellation of Brasília Festival of Brazilian Cinema Due to Lack of Funds

The 59th edition of the Brasília Festival of Brazilian Cinema, the oldest in the country, has officially been canceled due to a lack of resources. This marks the first cancellation of a festival edition in its 60-year history, a decision widely reported before being confirmed by government officials and the event organizers.

Reports indicate that the lack of financial transfers is linked to the fiscal adjustment implemented by the government of the Federal District, aimed at rescuing the Bank of Brasília (BRB) amid a crisis related to a financial scandal known as Master.

The cancellation of the festival, which was slated to be held in 2026, was announced by CBN radio and subsequently confirmed by the organizing team.

So far, the Palácio do Buriti has not commented officially on the situation, leaving questions about the future of the festival and its funding open. Established in 1965, the event is a landmark in Brazilian cinematic culture.
