Russia and Ukraine agreed to a geographically and temporally limited ceasefire for the city of Oleshky overnight into Tuesday. Following diplomatic mediation, the truce is intended to allow humanitarian supplies to reach the southern Ukrainian frontline city and enable evacuations. Both sides confirmed the start of the ceasefire.

Up to 2,000 people remain in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in the Kherson region, according to multiple sources. The civilian population there lacks water, food and medicine. The city is described as mined and has been contested for years.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov, the ceasefire has held so far without any recorded violations. The presidential office in Moscow confirmed compliance with the truce.

According to one report, the ceasefire was expanded beyond Oleshky on the word of Melania Trump. This suggests a possible geographical extension of the truce.

Military attacks have meanwhile continued in other parts of Ukraine. The ceasefire thus remains confined to the city of Oleshky.

The material contains no further details on the exact terms, duration or diplomatic intermediaries that led to the ceasefire agreement.
