The Indian government has decided to defer the Census 2027 operations in Manipur following protests pertaining to the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The first phase of the census, which involved house listing, was scheduled to commence on September 1 and continue until September 30, according to reports from multiple sources.

A meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs attended by key officials, including the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, focused on these demands. Reports indicate that various communities in Manipur, including the Meitei, Pangals (Meitei Muslims), and Nagas, have raised concerns about the need to update the NRC prior to the census taking place.

The decision to pause the census process comes amid significant public pressure and underscores the complexities surrounding demographic issues in the region.
