On September 11, 2026, the United States commemorated the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, which resulted in the deaths of 2,977 people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Ceremonies were held at Ground Zero in New York City, at the Pentagon, and at the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, reflecting on the impacts of that day.

Former presidents gathered at the site of the World Trade Center, alongside prominent figures including current and former mayors of New York City. The observance included moments of silence and readings of victims' names, fostering a collective memory of the tragic events.

Joseph Pfeifer, the first New York City fire chief to enter the World Trade Center on 9/11, shared his experience of setting up a command post amidst the chaos. He recalled the last moment he saw his brother, who was a fire lieutenant and died during rescue operations that day.

In addition to honoring those lost, the anniversary also highlighted ongoing rebuilding efforts at the World Trade Center site. Construction has begun on the final office tower, which will serve as the new global headquarters for American Express and is expected to be fully operational by 2031.

Survivors and first responders shared personal stories of bravery and loss. Custodian William Rodriguez, one of the last individuals to escape the North Tower, recounted his harrowing experience, emphasizing the human element of the day’s events, while others reflected on the profound sense of community in the aftermath of the attacks.

Photography exhibits compared images of the World Trade Center area on 9/11 with photos taken 25 years later, illustrating the physical and emotional changes in Lower Manhattan. Such displays aid in the ongoing collective remembrance of this pivotal moment in American history.
