Ceuta: Piantedosi confirms that Schengen suspension will remain as long as risks exist
The Italian Interior Minister states that the lifting of the Schengen blockade will depend on the end of migration risks. Spain is increasing security measures.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi stated that the suspension of the Schengen agreement will only be revoked when migration risks are fully resolved. This statement was made during a meeting in the Schengen Committee, where he also reiterated that the current suspension is not a measure against Spain.
The Spanish Guardia Civil has intensified checks and installed a new maritime barrier in response to fears of possible mass migration flows from Morocco to the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, with particular attention to August 14 and 15. However, Rabat has threatened to suspend the extradition agreement with Madrid if the situation is not managed adequately.
According to reports, the German government has stated that expulsions to Italy under the Dublin agreements will proceed as planned. Meanwhile, discussions are also ongoing about the possibility of establishing a repatriation hub in Uganda to manage migration flows, although the European Union has denied any interventions in this regard.
Meloni stated that expulsions of irregular migrants will continue, while Piantedosi emphasized that the checks on Italy were requested by other EU countries, without any objections to this decision.
