The student union Unef has published an annual study highlighting the rise in student living costs. According to its report, costs increased by 1.66% in 2026 and by more than 35% since 2017, the year Emmanuel Macron was elected.

The average monthly cost for students, after accounting for aid, stands at 1,300 euros, representing an increase of 74 euros compared to 2025. This rise is partly attributed to increases in rent, transportation, and food prices.

Unef also indicates that international students are particularly affected by these increases, as they are excluded from housing aid. The variation in rents, which has seen an increase of over 2%, further exacerbates the situation for this student population.

As a result, the union estimates that additional annual expenses for students can reach up to 888 euros, worsening their living conditions and access to education. Unef is calling for more support for this category of students.
