Ebola outbreak in Congo claims over 2000 lives

The Ebola epidemic in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has led to over 2000 fatalities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and local health authorities, at least 2011 people have died from the viral infection so far.

A total of 4381 confirmed infections have been registered, resulting in a high mortality rate of 45.9 percent. This outbreak is considered the fastest in history, as the numbers rose significantly quicker compared to previous epidemics.

According to the WHO, the disease has been circulating in the region since February, long before the outbreak was officially reported in May. This delayed announcement may have impacted efforts to combat the epidemic.

The current outbreak is attributed to the Bundibugyo variant of the virus, for which there is currently no vaccine available. This complicates the challenge for local health authorities, who must operate with limited resources.

The WHO has pledged support and is closely monitoring the situation. Healthcare facilities in the affected region are under significant strain, as infections rapidly increase and many patients must be treated in temporary shelters.

The international community is being called upon to take further action to contain the epidemic, in order to curb the spread of the virus and strengthen the healthcare system in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
