Eddy De Mulder, 60, from the East Flanders town of Ninove, has been declared brain dead at the AZORG hospital in Aalst. This determination was made after he was attacked by a nest of Asian hornets while attempting to feed his ponies on Thursday evening.

According to reports from Het Laatste Nieuws, Eddy fell into a coma after the attack, and his condition deteriorated, leading to the declaration of brain death. This news has been confirmed by a family member.

The attack occurred when Eddy approached the nest, which was estimated to contain 5,000 hornets. His cousin Guy stated that Eddy was not allergic to wasp stings, but the amount of venom from the hornets may have been too great.

The incident has raised concerns in the local community about the presence of Asian hornets, which are known for their aggressive behavior. Eddy's family is urging caution in the vicinity of such nests.

Eddy's death has had a significant impact on his family and friends, who are in shock from the loss. Authorities are being encouraged to take measures to protect against these insects, which are increasingly being reported in Flanders.
