This weekend in Kluisbergen, East Flanders, several people were stung by Asian hornets. The attacks occurred on the same country road, where both hikers and a cyclist were affected on Saturday and Sunday. Police have temporarily closed the road in an effort to prevent further incidents.

On Saturday, there was a walk along the affected route. According to reports, some victims had to be taken to the hospital for medical care following the attacks. The exact number of victims varies among different sources.

According to VRT NWS, at least five people were taken to the hospital after the stings on this country road. The attacks by the Asian hornets caused concern among hikers and passersby in the area.

A witness, Wim Loontjens, described an attack on Sunday morning. He reported seeing a mountain bike lying on the ground with no owner nearby, and shortly thereafter, he was himself attacked by the hornets. He stated that he was stung more than ten times.

The incidents have sparked discussions about the presence of Asian hornets in the area. This species can react aggressively if they feel threatened, which may lead to such attacks on people who come too close.

The acute situation has led to increased attention towards combating these insects in the region. There are ongoing considerations about how to prevent such attacks in the future.
