A nest of Asian hornets has been located near the Sint-Anna Goethe primary school in Linkeroever, Antwerp. This discovery came after reports of disturbances caused by a large group of these insects, which had been active in the area since Tuesday, according to reports.

The school responded by closing off part of the playground as a precautionary measure. Additionally, children with bee or wasp allergies were kept indoors to protect them from potential stings.

The nest was found by pest controller Lara Straetemans, who utilized bait traps and transmitters in the search. It turned out that the nest was not on the school grounds itself, but rather on the property of a nearby school, as reported by VRT NWS.

The removal of the nest is scheduled for today. Both a beekeeper and volunteers will explore the area to check for any other potential nests in the vicinity.

The playground is expected to be fully accessible again by Monday, allowing students to play safely during their breaks.

During the search, the involved parties were alerted about the potential presence of more nests, ensuring that the situation in the area will be closely monitored.
