On Wednesday, the Estonian Parliament, the Riigikogu, held the election for the new President. The only candidate for the highest state office was the incumbent Justice Chancellor Ülle Madise.
Madise will take on the representative duties of the head of state. Her predecessor, Alar Karis, had previously announced that he would not stand for reelection.
Prior to her election, Madise oversaw legislation in Estonia. In her statements, she emphasized Estonia's role as a key player for security in Europe.
The election took place in a country in the Baltic region that is a member of both the EU and NATO. The vote in Parliament was decisive for the future of Estonian politics.
