EU approves JD.com’s acquisition of MediaMarktSaturn with conditions
The European Commission has approved the acquisition of MediaMarktSaturn by China's JD.com with conditions, fearing market distortions from state aid.

The European Commission has approved the acquisition of MediaMarktSaturn GmbH by the Chinese retail giant JD.com. The deal, valued at 2.2 billion euros, is subject to certain conditions to ensure fair competition within the EU.
According to the Commission's decision, strict conditions must be met to avoid market distortions due to potential Chinese state subsidies. JD.com has committed to conducting its business with Ceconomy, the parent company of MediaMarktSaturn, under market terms and to monitor this for the next ten years.
The approval demonstrates the Commission's response to the challenges that international acquisitions pose to the local market. There was particular concern regarding potential unfair competitive advantages arising from state support in China.

JD.com, as one of the largest e-commerce providers in China, will gain access to the European electronics retail market through this acquisition, especially by integrating MediaMarkt and Saturn, which are among the leading brands in this sector.
The decision was announced by various media outlets as well as the Commission itself. While some reports interpret the approval as a step toward greater integration of global markets, the Commission's focus is clearly on maintaining competitive equality.
In addition to the aforementioned conditions, a ten-year oversight on the business practices of MediaMarktSaturn will be ensured by the European Commission. These measures aim to prevent any competitive distortions and maintain stable market conditions. The specific impact of the acquisition on the European retail landscape remains to be seen.
