EU interior ministers discuss Ceuta crisis and solidarity with Spain

During a videoconference, EU interior ministers expressed their support for Spain amid the Ceuta crisis. However, the discussion on European border protection remains contentious.

In a hastily convened videoconference, the EU interior ministers expressed their solidarity with Spain in the current crisis in Ceuta. They emphasized that a common European border protection is a responsibility shared by all EU member states during the meeting.

Tensions had originally risen between several EU countries and Spain when developments in Ceuta reignited the discussion on the handling of asylum processes. Nevertheless, the interior ministers found a unified stance in this meeting, voicing their collective support for Spain.

The ministers also discussed lessons to be learned from the crisis in relation to the new common EU asylum system. Despite this demonstrated unity, the question of how to handle European border protection in the future remains unresolved.
