Farmers demand 140 million euros from the government to support the sector
Around 150 agro-forestry leaders gathered in Lisbon, calling for immediate financial support from the government to address production costs.
Several leaders from the agro-forestry sector gathered on Monday outside the Assembleia da República in Lisbon, demanding 140 million euros in support from the government. This action was led by the Confederation of Farmers of Portugal (CAP), which believes that the previously announced aid is insufficient.
Farmers' representatives are requesting this amount to offset rising production costs and to regain competitiveness compared to Spain. The current situation has posed a significant challenge for the agricultural sector in Portugal, as noted by the leaders present at the gathering.
According to the CAP, the need for financial support is even more pressing in light of the economic pressure the sector is facing. Farmers hope that the government will respond to their request promptly to avoid worsening working conditions in agriculture.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Agriculture mentioned that the government is doing its utmost to support the sector, but did not guarantee that the amount requested by the farmers could be made available immediately.
In addition, the government has already announced plans for an investment of 162 million euros for farmers in 2027. However, representatives of the sector believe that this proposal is long-term and that urgent support is necessary.
Today’s gathering highlights the widespread dissatisfaction within the agricultural community regarding the financial aid that has been offered, reflecting the ongoing pressure on farmers in Portugal due to rising costs and the need to maintain competitiveness.
