Five Dead, Several Injured in Delhi Building Collapse

A five-storey building collapsed in the New Seemapuri area of Delhi on Wednesday, with reports indicating that the incident occurred around 3:15 PM to 3:30 PM. Local residents became aware of the collapse when they heard a loud noise, and emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene, including four fire tenders from the Delhi Fire Service.

Initial reports indicate that five individuals lost their lives, including two children and a pregnant woman. The injured, totaling eight, were transported to GTB Hospital for treatment, with the emergency department currently operational at the Rajiv Gandhi Hospital campus, according to officials.

The building reportedly belonged to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board and had existed for approximately 20 to 25 years. Concerns regarding its structural integrity had been raised following recent earthquakes in Uttarakhand, with residents noting cracks in the building after the tremors.

Rescue operations are ongoing, as emergency teams work to locate those believed to be trapped under the debris. Reports suggest that the search could be complicated by the instability of the remaining structure and other obstacles present at the site.

Local residents, some of whom were gathered at the scene, expressed their anguish, with one individual mentioning that a family member had managed to call while trapped, indicating a struggle for air. Rescue teams continue to explore the area, while the operations attract attention due to the nature of the tragedy.

Investigations into the cause of the collapse are underway, with authorities examining the conditions that may have contributed to the incident. Meanwhile, local traffic has been affected as part of the area around the site has been cordoned off to facilitate rescue efforts.
