The Alliance of General Information Press (APIG), comprising nearly 300 French daily newspapers, has lodged a complaint with the Competition Authority. This action comes after the launch, at the end of July, of Google's AI-generated summary tools in France.

Publishers are concerned about the potential impact of these AI summaries, fearing they deter internet users from clicking on their articles. The possibility of receiving instant answers via AI could lead to a decrease in traffic to their sites, thereby damaging their associated advertising revenue.

According to media reports, Google is using press content to create its AI summaries without prior negotiation for authorization or compensation. This has led to accusations of unfair practices by the American giant.

Representatives from the press have emphasized that without intervention from the Competition Authority, this situation could have serious consequences for the entire sector. The general sentiment among publishers is that Google's AI tools threaten not only their audience but also their business model.

The APIG's complaint aims to compel Google to adhere to the commitments made in 2022 regarding the use of press content. The organization explains that these summaries create a significant risk of traffic loss, which could harm the viability of French media.

The reaction from the Competition Authority is now awaited, as the debate over the use of AI technologies in the media sector intensifies, highlighting publishers' economic concerns in the face of these emerging technologies. These events underline the growing tension between technological innovation and the interests of traditional media.
