The German women's basketball team kicked off their home World Cup on Friday evening. In the Berlin Arena, head coach Olaf Lange's squad faced the Spanish team, considered one of the toughest opponents in their group. The match took place in front of 12,550 spectators, including Chancellor Merz.

However, the start was disappointing for the German players. They suffered a significant defeat against the vice-European champions from Spain, losing 83 to 53. This clear loss put the high expectations that had been set before the tournament to the test.

Despite the sporting setback, the World Cup remains an important challenge for the hosts, who have set their sights on a medal. The basketball players have the support of the spectators and the political representatives present at the event on their side.
