The Italian government has decided to abolish the vehicle tax for small and medium-powered cars and motorcycles starting in 2027. The measure was approved today in the Council of Ministers and concerns over 70% of the cars currently in circulation.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described this tax as one of the most hated by Italians, asserting that its abolition will be structural and included in the next budget law. Meloni stated that the intention is to make the cancellation permanent, once the financial framework for the law is clarified.

According to government sources, the estimated costs for this initiative amount to approximately 2.3 billion euros, funded through savings from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr).

In addition to abolishing the vehicle tax, discussions are already underway regarding potential extensions of exemptions for large families. This aspect has been mentioned as part of a broader effort to relieve the tax burden on Italian citizens.

A decree related to the new tax measures, including changes to diesel excise taxes and the suspension of the vehicle tax, has been published in the Official Gazette and will come into effect starting September 18.

The government has emphasized that each citizen will be entitled to only one exemption related to this new measure, which has been met with some enthusiasm by certain representatives of the majority.
