Government alters compensation regime for Iberian wolf attacks

The Portuguese government has implemented changes to the compensation regime applied to attacks by the Iberian wolf. These changes aim to improve indemnities for agricultural producers whose herds are affected by this predator.

According to information from Observador, the new regime allows for enhanced indemnities as well as a revision of eligibility criteria for affected producers. As a result, a more effective and appropriate response to attack situations is expected.

Additionally, RTP reported that the value of indemnities will no longer be progressively reduced as the total number of registered attacks increases throughout each calendar year. This measure aims to alleviate the financial impact on farmers.

The changes come after numerous complaints from producers, who argued that previous compensations were insufficient to cover the losses caused by attacks from the Iberian wolf.

With these new guidelines, the government aims not only to protect herds but also to support the sustainability of agricultural activity in regions affected by the predator.
