The Governor of the Bank of Portugal, Álvaro Santos Pereira, highlighted the importance of increasing urgency in policies related to the housing market. During the presentation of the October Economic Bulletin, Pereira noted a decline in investment in this area, indicating a need for growth to address the current situation.

The meeting, held at the Palácio de Belém, was also an opportunity to discuss Portugal's economic situation and the dynamics of the financial system. The encounter took place ahead of the submission of the 2027 State Budget proposal to the Assembleia da República, which is expected soon.

Pereira expressed that he would not be surprised if there is a budget surplus this year, emphasizing the economic context in which the budget is being delivered. This statement comes at a critical time, considering growing global and local concerns regarding public finances.

During this event, the governor stated that the approach to the housing issue is not receiving the necessary urgency, which, according to him, could have long-term implications for the national economy. Investment in housing is seen as a critical factor for economic stability.

The need for a more rigorous examination of public spending and its effects on the economy was also a topic of his analysis. Emphasizing caution in this area may be vital, given the economic forecasts.

In addition to discussing housing, the meeting included an assessment of the role of oversight in the financial system, highlighting the importance of supervision and regulation during times of economic uncertainty.
