On Saturday afternoon, significant flash floods occurred in Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area of the Grand Canyon, leading to extensive damage and evacuations, according to the National Park Service. It has been reported that dozens of individuals needed to be evacuated due to the dangerous conditions caused by the floods, which affected not just the visitors but also key infrastructure.

The flooding, particularly severe in Bright Angel Creek—a tributary flowing into the Colorado River—washed away footbridges and moved large boulders and metal debris into the river, fundamentally altering the landscape. Meteorologist Justin Johndrow from the National Weather Service noted that most of the water from the storm ran off instantly, contributing to the suddenness of the event.

Authorities indicate that around 20 individuals may still be missing in the aftermath of the flash floods. The situation remains serious, as officials are monitoring weather predictions that suggest further storms and heavy rainfall in the area, raising concerns about additional evacuations.

No injuries have been reported so far, which park officials have confirmed amidst the evacuations. The rapid response from emergency services has been essential in ensuring the safety of those affected and in managing the evolving crisis.

Access to certain parts of the Grand Canyon is currently restricted due to the flooding, with park officials advising caution. The infrastructure damage and potential new storms have complicated the situation, prompting ongoing assessments by park services.

As conditions develop, updates will follow from the National Park Service and emergency management teams, who are focused on ensuring public safety and responding effectively to the natural disaster's impact. Evacuations and check-ins for missing persons are ongoing as search efforts proceed.
