Gustavo Galassi, businessman and engineer, formally announced on Thursday (27) his withdrawal from the 2026 Senate elections representing the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). The request was filed with the Regional Electoral Court of Minas Gerais (TRE-MG) just hours after Marcelo Heringer from the PDT also exited the race.

Galassi's decision comes amid political maneuvers surrounding Aécio Neves' candidacy, who had previously stated he would not run for any positions in the upcoming elections.

On Friday (28), Aécio Neves declared that, contrary to his earlier statements, he will enter the Senate race for Minas Gerais. Aécio, who is a federal deputy and national president of the PSDB, revealed his decision at a press conference at the party's headquarters in Belo Horizonte.

In August, Aécio had mentioned that, after 40 years in political roles, he did not intend to seek any new positions in the 2026 elections. However, his recent announcement marks a significant shift in his stance.

The press conference where Aécio confirmed his candidacy took place in a setting of increasing anticipation among his supporters and members of the PSDB, especially following the withdrawals of Galassi and Heringer.

Political dynamics in Minas Gerais continue to evolve, with attention focused on the next steps of the candidates and ongoing negotiations within the party.
