Heavy rains in Japan: death toll rises to nine

Torrential rains near Tokyo, Japan, have resulted in the deaths of at least nine people. These severe weather conditions, which began recently, have particularly affected the city of Chiba, where the weather has caused significant flooding.

According to reports from NHK, over 1,000 homes have been flooded and many residents have been evacuated, leaving about 460 people in temporary shelters. A man is currently reported missing in the area as search operations continue.

The victims include individuals found trapped in their submerged vehicles or caught in collapses on the streets, as reported by RTBF. Rescue efforts have been intensified in response to the critical situation.

The Ministry of Land reported that rainfall in Chiba has exceeded three times the typical total for August, indicating an exceptional intensity of storms. The region is facing significant transport disruptions due to this event.

Scientists note that climate change could play a role in the increased frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events, according to recent studies, raising concerns about future disaster management.
