Identification of the bodies of Marcinelle accident victims underway
Belgium continues its efforts to identify the remains of miners who died in the 1956 disaster.

The fire at Bois du Cazier on August 8, 1956, claimed the lives of 262 miners and remains the worst mining disaster in Belgium's history. In response to this tragic event, Belgium launched a large scientific and humanitarian project in 2021.
As part of this project, fourteen unidentified bodies have been exhumed for DNA analysis. These efforts aim to give a name to the victims and provide solace to the affected families.
To date, six of the fourteen "unknowns" have been identified through DNA analyses, marking a significant progress in this commemorative endeavor.
