The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms in Delhi, as rain began to lash the region on Friday. This alert also extended to parts of neighboring Uttar Pradesh, including Noida and Ghaziabad, which were placed under an orange warning for similar conditions.

The sudden downpour caught many off guard, particularly those participating in Janmashtami celebrations, leading to difficulties navigating the rain-soaked streets. Reports indicated that umbrellas dotted the roads as people sought shelter from the rainfall intensifying throughout the day.

At Indira Gandhi International Airport, waterlogging was observed, affecting operations and inconveniencing passengers. Images showed individuals wading through water with rolled-up trousers while pushing their luggage towards the airport's entry gates.

Forecasts from the IMD suggest that light to moderate showers are expected to continue into the evening, accompanied by strong winds with gusts reaching up to 60 km/h, potentially exacerbating the stormy conditions in the region.
