Indonesian Students Fall Ill After Consuming Government-Supplied Meals
More than 1,700 individuals, including students and teachers, have been affected by food poisoning linked to Indonesia's free-meals programme this week.

Over 500 students in East Java’s Sidoarjo region fell ill after consuming meals supplied by the Indonesian government, with many requiring hospital treatment. As of now, most of the 516 affected students have been discharged from medical care, according to reports.
The food poisoning incidents are part of a larger issue, as the non-governmental organization Network for Education Watch reported around 37,600 cases of food poisoning related to the government’s free-meals programme as of August 8.
In Central Java, an additional 777 students and teachers were also hospitalized due to similar food poisoning cases following the consumption of government-issued meals. This report comes from a local school principal and adds to the ongoing concerns surrounding food safety in the initiative.

Altogether, more than 1,700 people across various locations have reported food poisoning in connection with the programme in just one week. Reports indicate that there have been separate incidents across three other areas involving 950 individuals falling ill from food poisoning.
The situation has raised significant attention, prompting discussions within a parliamentary commission that oversees health matters, highlighting the urgent need for investigations into the safety of the meals provided under this government initiative.
