José Luís Carneiro criticizes government as President seeks clarifications on police action
José Luís Carneiro criticized the government for failing to resolve issues, while the President requested information on the recent police crackdown in Lisbon and Porto.

José Luís Carneiro, leader of the Socialist Party (PS), expressed concerns about the government's inability to address urgent issues such as housing and healthcare. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts, while simultaneously rejecting the formation of a central bloc to govern the country.
Following a series of confrontations between police and protesters, President António José Seguro requested detailed clarifications from the government and the ombudsman regarding police interventions in Lisbon and Porto. This request came in response to the police crackdown that occurred during the protests, resulting in scenes of violence.
The calls for action by the President were reinforced by members of the political left, who pressed for the President to be vigilant and intervene after the violent events of the previous night. Despite these efforts, police moved against the protesters, disregarding calls to moderate their approach.

Images of the confrontations in Lisbon and Porto showed an escalation of tension, with reports of lawmakers attempting to dissuade police from acting against the demonstrators. However, appeals for ongoing dialogue were not met, resulting in decisive police actions.
In the early hours of Sunday, the President held discussions with Prime Minister António Costa and ombudsman Luísa Neto regarding the emerging situation and the police action that took place in both cities.
Protests have again concentrated in Rossio, where new demonstrations are anticipated. The situation remains tense, and authorities are being questioned by society about their management of the conflict between the police and citizens.
