Judge Peinado summons Begoña Gómez for preliminary hearing before retirement
Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has summoned Begoña Gómez for a preliminary hearing in her upcoming trial for embezzlement and influence peddling.

Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has summoned Begoña Gómez, wife of the Prime Minister, for a preliminary hearing scheduled for this Tuesday at 6 PM. This hearing is a prerequisite to the formal opening of the trial for alleged crimes of embezzlement and influence peddling, according to an order issued by the magistrate on Monday.
The summons came after Judge Peinado received defense briefs from Gómez and her advisor, Cristina Álvarez, who have requested her acquittal and denied that the actions constitute a crime. The preliminary hearing also involves all parties involved in the case, meaning that Álvarez is expected to be present at the hearing.
This procedure marks the end of the investigative phase that began on April 16, 2024. With this hearing, Peinado also prepares to elevate the case to the Provincial Court for an intermediate phase, thus concluding his work before his scheduled retirement on September 27.

Peinado, who proposed this hearing with just 24 hours' notice, has rejected the defense's request to question a specific witness. This decision has been communicated to the parties involved in the process, highlighting the urgency with which proceedings are being handled before his departure.
The opening of the trial against Gómez will be managed by a jury court, adding an additional level of formality and attention to this case, which has drawn public interest given Gómez's status as a public figure.
Judge Peinado has clarified that this summons is personal and directly involves the accused in an event anticipated to be crucial for the legal advancement of the case. The ramifications of this judicial procedure could have a significant impact on future instances related to corruption and politics in the country.
