Arvind Kejriwal, the convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has directed criticism at the Central government regarding the increasing prices of sugar. He pointed out that historically, India was an exporter of sugar but is now considering importing it due to current price surges.

Prices of sugar have escalated recently, rising from ₹48.18 per kilogram on July 20, 2026, to ₹55.70 per kilogram by August 20. In response to these surging prices and the market situation, the Centre has authorized the import of 1 million tonnes of raw sugar without duty until October 31, aiming to stabilize the domestic market before the festive season.

In a statement regarding the sugar price rise, the Centre clarified that the increase cannot be linked to the ethanol policy. This clarification comes amid rising public and political scrutiny over the economic decisions affecting essential commodities.
