Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the caste census, asking for the withdrawal of the existing questionnaire. They raised concerns about its accuracy, stating that the current open-ended questions could be misleading in categorizing castes.

The leaders pointed out that the same caste might have different names, sub-castes, and variations in spelling across various regions in India, which can lead to discrepancies in data collection.

In their letter, they recommended the development of a new questionnaire with a drop-down list of castes. This suggestion aims to ensure that variations in names and linguistic differences do not result in the same caste being recorded separately, thereby enhancing the census's effectiveness.

Kharge and Gandhi also proposed that the government consider caste surveys conducted in Bihar and Telangana as potential models and consult experts for guidance in the process. They emphasized the importance of accurate data collection to represent India's diverse caste structure.
