Kurdish leader announces dissolution of Syrian Democratic Forces
Mazloum Abdi has announced the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces, after over a decade of existence and based on an agreement with the Syrian government.

Mazloum Abdi, the leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), announced the dissolution of this Kurdish-led military group. This declaration took place on Tuesday evening at the presidential palace in Damascus, where he described the step as the end of the SDF's deployment.
The SDF was formed over a decade ago and played a crucial role in the fight against the jihadist militia known as the Islamic State. Their military successes, particularly in the offensive against the terror group in 2019, were also made possible with Western support.
Abdi emphasized in his statement that the dissolution of the SDF is announced with full responsibility as an independent force. This decision follows an agreement made in January with the Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

According to reports, the SDF intends to give up its military existence and integrate into the Syrian army. This is viewed as part of the Syrian government’s efforts to reunify the country.
The announcement of the dissolution marks not only the end of a long military engagement for the SDF but could also have far-reaching implications for Kurdish autonomy aspirations in Syria. However, clear information regarding the exact circumstances of the agreement with the Syrian government remains unavailable.
The dissolution could potentially influence the geopolitical balance in the region, as the SDF had previously been regarded as a significant force in northeastern Syria. Reactions from various factions and governments are expected in the coming days.
