The eighteen municipalities of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) have unanimously approved the creation of new Navegante passes for tourists. These passes will be valid for up to five days and include a special ticket applicable to events, according to reports from several sources.

The approval of the Navegante passes for tourists represents a new option to enhance the visiting experience in the Portuguese capital, allowing for more accessible and convenient travel for those visiting the city. Details about the costs of these passes have yet to be clearly disclosed.

In addition to the introduction of tourist passes, the Green Rail Pass covering suburban trains from Comboios de Portugal (CP) in the cities of Lisbon and Porto will be available starting this Sunday. This pass is of great relevance for users who need to frequently travel between the two cities.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing announced that holders of the Green Rail Pass can start using it this weekend. The introduction of this pass aims to facilitate access to public transportation, and to date, 1.4 million passes have been sold since its launch in October 2024.

Both initiatives—the introduction of the Navegante pass for tourists and the extension of the Green Rail Pass—could influence the dynamics of public transportation in the region and support mobility for both tourists and local residents.

The measures aim to encourage the use of public transportation in light of the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions. However, expectations will hinge on user uptake and the efficiency of the new passes.
