Lok Sabha Passes Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill Amid Protests
The Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill was passed in Lok Sabha without debate amid protests from opposition members.
The Lok Sabha passed the Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill on Monday, which seeks to amend the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act of 1957. Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy introduced the bill during the session.
As the Chair, Jagdambika Pal, commenced the proceedings, she advised opposition members to maintain decorum in the House. Despite this, opposition members protested vocally, shouting 'Adani, Adani' as the bill was put to a vote.
The bill will become law pending assent from the President. This legislation limits the authority of states to impose taxes on minerals, a contentious issue that contributed to the protests during the voting process.
