Luxury Cruise Ship Strands Passengers in Cambodia Amid Soaring Fuel Costs
More than 200 passengers are left stranded in Cambodia after the luxury MV Odyssey suspended operations due to escalating fuel prices and financial difficulties.

The luxury cruise ship MV Odyssey has abruptly suspended its operations in Cambodia, leaving over 200 passengers stranded. The decision to end the cruise was attributed to increasing fuel costs that reportedly surged to unsustainable levels, affecting the operator, Villa Vie Residences.
Passengers aboard the MV Odyssey, which was on a years-long voyage, were disembarked in Sihanoukville as the company announced the halt in operations. The ship had been carrying mostly American passengers along with a sizable crew, totaling 156.
Reports indicate that the operator requested passengers to contribute towards fuel costs as financial troubles mounted. The situation arose after fuel expenses reportedly skyrocketed from $1,800 to $8,000, significantly impacting the cruise's viability.

The MV Odyssey, which had set off from Northern Ireland in October 2024 after a delay caused by repairs, was designed to provide long-term accommodations at sea. According to sources, it had been in operation for over two years before its sudden suspension.
As passengers await further information about their return, some have already secured temporary accommodations, while others are proceeding to their respective destinations. Despite the suspension, there are indications that the ship might seek refueling and a way to resume its journey after leaving Cambodia.
The events have prompted discussions among the stranded passengers, who are now actively seeking investors to assist in continuing their voyage. The situation reflects broader issues faced by the cruise industry amid rising operational costs.
