Emmanuel Macron on Thursday denounced far-left groups for "seditious acts", accusing them of wanting to "overthrow the Republic". The statement came following violent acts and looting during protests the previous Saturday against high living costs.

The French president called for "a return to calm" two days before new protests are scheduled. According to the agency Público, next Saturday will see a twenty per cent increase in police presence, accompanied by security plans that include elite forces and additional armoured vehicles.

Restrictions on demonstrations in the coming days were confirmed by the French government as a measure to restore order following the unrest. Macron made these accusations six months before the French presidential elections.
