On October 17, massive protests took place in several French cities, gathering hundreds of thousands of participants, primarily yellow vests, students, and workers, to protest against the rising cost of living.

In Paris, two unauthorized marches were reported, leading to incidents with law enforcement. According to reports, tension was particularly high in the capital, where at least 21 arrests occurred in the morning following an action in front of the CNews headquarters.

Clashes were also observed in Lyon and other cities, with protests escalating into urban violence, including fires and looting. A notable incident occurred in Saint-Étienne, where a protester lost a hand due to a grenade thrown by the police, illustrating the increasing violence during these events.

In total, approximately 1,200 arrests were recorded nationwide during this tumultuous day, according to sources, and scenes of urban guerrilla warfare were reported, with acts of vandalism impacting various public and private property.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez expressed concerns about the potential for increased violence, citing fears that far-left elements could exacerbate the situation during the afternoon protests.

The mobilization on October 17 occurs against a backdrop of growing social discontent in France, exacerbated by rising prices, particularly in the energy sector, echoing concerns about social stability in the coming months.
