Merano–Avelengo road reopens to traffic as of August 10
Following severe weather in June 2026, the road between Merano and Avelengo has reopened, reports Councillor Daniel Alfreider.

The road between Merano and Avelengo (LS 98) has been reopened to traffic over a month after a mudslide caused by severe weather on June 28, 2026. The restoration of the roadway before the northern entrance of the Kathrein Tunnel has been successfully completed. Councillor Daniel Alfreider announced that the road has been passable in both directions since Monday, August 10, at 6 PM.
In the weeks following the severe weather, extensive work was carried out to secure the road and remove the damages. The restoration was necessary to re-establish the transport connection between Merano and Avelengo, as the road had been inaccessible for an extended period due to the weather-related damages.
The measure to reopen the road represents an important advancement for regional infrastructure. Future initiatives to improve safety in the area may be considered to prevent similar incidents.
