Moor fire in Hohen Venn: Challenges in firefighting efforts
In Hohen Venn, a raised bog area in Belgium, fires are difficult to combat due to the circumstances.

The fire in Hohen Venn, a dried raised bog, presents a significant challenge for emergency services. According to reports, conditions are particularly difficult because the fire in the peat bog can spread underground and is therefore not always visible.
Such fires, often referred to as "zombie fires," can smolder undetected in the ground for long periods. In addition to trees and grasses, it is primarily parts of the peat bog that are affected, creating dangerous situations.
Emergency services face the enormous difficulty of effectively locating and extinguishing the fire, as the embers are hidden deep in the ground. This increases the risk of flare-ups if they are not completely extinguished. A comprehensive firefighting effort is hindered by the unpredictable conditions.
