A wildfire broke out on Friday in the Hautes Fagnes region, a vast wooded area in eastern Belgium favored by hikers and close to the German border. The fire has quickly spread overnight, already covering more than 1,650 hectares, according to reports.
Local authorities have implemented measures to protect the population. The village of Sourbrodt is particularly threatened and could be evacuated if the situation worsens further.
Firefighting teams are actively working to contain the flames and prevent any further spread. The complexity of the terrain and the weather conditions may complicate these efforts.
Fire services are continuing to closely monitor the situation, a spokesperson said, and updates will be provided as the fire evolves.
