Children from Kazou camp reunited with parents after evacuation in Hoge Venen
After an evacuation due to a wildfire, 53 children from the Kazou camp were safely reunited with their parents in Mechelen.
On Sunday afternoon at around 3:45 PM, a bus carrying 53 children from the Kazou camp arrived safely at the Nekkerhal in Mechelen. The children, aged 9 and 10 years, were evacuated earlier that weekend due to a severe wildfire in the Hoge Venen region.
According to the organization, the children were reunited with their parents unharmed, who were visibly relieved. It was emphasized that safety was always the top priority during the evacuation.
The children had initially been moved to another location within the Hoge Venen, but it was ultimately decided to allow them to return home.
The wildfire that prompted the evacuation has had a significant impact on the area. One parent reported that the air at the camp was orange with smoke and other particles.
