Officers from the Prisons Department have visited the residence of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in Taman Duta to assess if it is suitable for him to serve his sentence under house arrest. This evaluation follows a decision to potentially allow Najib to transition from prison to house arrest, contingent on payment of a fine amounting to RM50 million (approximately US$12.26 million).

According to sources, the Prisons Department is awaiting official notification regarding the conditions under which Najib can commence his house arrest. A spokesperson mentioned that all necessary steps will follow once formal written instructions are received about the implementation of the house arrest.

Najib's legal team has expressed concerns about his ability to pay the stipulated RM50 million fine. They reported that numerous assets and bank accounts of Najib are currently frozen due to ongoing corruption investigations, which impedes his financial capabilities to fulfill the payment required for his release to house arrest.

In the meantime, the Attorney General has announced plans for the Prisons Department to issue standard operating procedures related to Najib's house arrest, emphasizing the legal framework within which this arrangement will function.

Political reactions have emerged from various quarters regarding Najib's house arrest. Anthony Loke, a member of the DAP, indicated a willingness to resign from his ministerial position due to the political ramifications of the house arrest decision, although party officials clarified that this was his personal choice and not an organizational mandate.

The G25 group has called for the Attorney General's written opinion on Najib's house arrest to be made public, stressing the importance of transparency and accountability in such governmental decisions. This reflects ongoing debates about legality and the implications of Najib's situation on Malaysian politics.
