NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on the morning of Sunday, the 30th, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch occurred at 07:26 Eastern Time, which is 12:26 in Lisbon. This new space telescope is part of a mission focused on exploring the mysteries of the universe, including the search for planets in distant star systems.

The Nancy Grace Roman is equipped to investigate some of the greatest challenges of modern astronomy, such as dark energy and dark matter, which make up most of the universe but remain elusive to scientists. During its mission, the telescope will have the capability to test gravity on immense scales, potentially providing new insights into the formation and evolution of the cosmos.

This advanced observatory was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket and is destined for a observation point about 1 million miles from Earth. Its large field of view is designed to enable large-scale discoveries that significantly surpass the capabilities of the Hubble Telescope, amplifying the understanding gained by both the Webb and Hubble telescopes. Following the launch, NASA expressed optimism about the potential of the Roman to revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos.

Scientists hope that the telescope will be able to discover thousands of new planets and billions of galaxies, thereby expanding our knowledge of the diversity of exoplanets and the structure of the universe. This type of research is seen as crucial for answering fundamental questions about the origin and behavior of matter and energy in the universe.

In addition to its primary functions, the telescope will also conduct observations that could help map the cosmos, providing data that will enhance our understanding of the destiny and evolution of galaxies in space. The scientific program of the Nancy Grace Roman will be collaborative, involving scientists from various parts of the world and different areas of astronomical research.

This launch marks a significant advancement in space exploration, ensuring that NASA continues to play a central role in the investigation of the universe's secrets. The investigations to be conducted by the Roman Telescope have the potential to produce a lasting impact on science and our understanding of the universe as the mission unfolds over the coming years.
