On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the III National Multi-Hazard Drill took place at 8:00 PM, convened by the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci). This exercise was conducted under the slogan 'Choose to Prepare!' and aimed to prepare the population for natural threats such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and heavy rains, as well as to assess the response capacity of institutions and citizens.

According to reports, during the drill, a tsunami alert was activated through the Sismate system, allowing thousands of Peruvians to receive emergency notifications on their cellphones. Such exercises are vital in a country that is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, known for its significant seismic and volcanic activity.

The drill included an 'earthquake' of magnitude 8.8, which, in the context of the exercise, resulted in a fictitious toll of 231 'deaths' and 3,800 'injuries' in the Cercado de Lima, according to the balance reported by Indeci.

Additionally, the participation of inmates from the Lurigancho prison was highlighted, underscoring the importance of these activities in the penitentiary context. The National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) emphasized that these drills are fundamental to ensuring safety in correctional facilities and preparing individuals for emergency situations.

The event also saw active participation from the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation (MVCS), where authorities and officials assessed their response to emergencies during the drill. This reinforces the commitment of institutions to disaster preparedness.

Finally, different regions of the country participated by adapting to their local realities, testing specific action protocols in response to disasters such as flooding or landslides, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to preparation and response to various natural risks.
