On Wednesday, a massive flash flood struck northern Nepal, particularly affecting areas near the border with Tibet. Authorities reported that the disaster has resulted in at least nine confirmed deaths and substantial damage to infrastructure including roads, bridges, and power projects.

The flooding has led to the disappearance of 384 tourists, a significant number of whom are from international locations such as India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia. Rescue efforts have been complicated, with helicopters unable to land in flooded areas due to high water levels, as noted by various agencies involved in the search and rescue operations.

Reports from local authorities indicate that the Prime Minister of Nepal, Balendra Shah, has ordered evacuations to safer areas as part of the response efforts. The floods have also severely affected the country’s hydropower capacity, disrupting approximately 12% of its output.

In nearby Tibet, concerns about casualties have also emerged, with officials warning of “major casualties” in the Gyirong county following the severe weather impacts. This has raised alarms about the extent of the disaster’s effects across the border.

Additionally, more than 50 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu, India, have been reported stranded as landslips disrupted their route. They were on board several vehicles, with some taking refuge in a police outpost in Timure, located about 150 kilometers north of Kathmandu, according to local reports.

The Nepalese police have released terrifying images of the flooding, which swept away homes and inundated villages, amplifying fears for the missing tourists and the overall impact of the disaster on the region. Recovery efforts continue amidst these challenges.
