The Dutch Public Broadcasting (NPO) has officially requested Minister Rianne Letschert of Media, D66, to revoke the license of the aspiring broadcaster Ongehoord Nederland (ON). This request follows a reassessment of the legal basis, which the NPO now believes to be sufficient.

Two weeks ago, the NPO had explained to broadcasters that it did not see the legal grounds to submit this request to the minister. However, the situation has changed, partly due to the involvement of Minister Letschert, who now wants to revoke recognition.

The NPO stated in a press release that it feels compelled to take this step in the interest of efficient cooperation within the current and future public system.

Additionally, Minister Letschert has summoned the director of Ongehoord Nederland, Peter Vlemmix, to the ministry to discuss the future of the broadcaster. This meeting brings further attention to developments surrounding ON.

The NPO has expressed its concerns about the disruption of cooperation with Ongehoord Nederland. According to the NPO's statement, the broadcaster would be in violation of the principles of a healthy public system.

The situation surrounding Ongehoord Nederland and the NPO's decision highlight the complexity of media policy and the role of public broadcasters in the Dutch media landscape.
