Investigations are also underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident, including potential negligence concerning vessel operation and adherence to weather warnings. Reports from the Prime Minister's office suggested that strong winds contributed to the ferry's sinking.

The local government has expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and is coordinating closely with rescue teams to maximize the search efforts. Various sources emphasized the critical need for immediate and effective response strategies in light of the incident.

The MV Matui was operating as part of regular inter-island transport, raising questions about safety regulations and enforcement in the region. The ongoing investigation will focus on the conditions that led to the ferry's sinking and whether proper precautions were taken.
