The Mayor of Porto, Pedro Duarte, announced that over 100,000 people have signed up for the free public transport pass available through the municipal card Porto. This information was communicated at a press conference last Friday, where the mayor highlighted the speed with which the program has been adopted.

The free pass was introduced on July 10, and in less than two months, it has gained a significant number of users. The measure seems to have attracted around half of the new users who, until now, had never possessed a transport pass.

Pedro Duarte indicated that this development demonstrates a significant increase in the use of public transport in the city. The mayor noted that this initiative is being well received by the population, and many of the new sign-ups are experiencing public transport for the first time.

Additionally, during his speech, Duarte suggested that this change in citizen behavior could lead to structural changes in the future, although he did not specify an exact timeline for such changes. According to the mayor, the expected impact and transformation should happen both in the medium and long term.

The free pass aims to facilitate access to public transport, promoting more sustainable mobility in the city. The initiative seeks to encourage citizens to use public transport instead of private vehicles, contributing to the reduction of traffic and pollution.

The uptake of this measure reflects the positive response of the population to the new transport policies and the need for modernization of public services in the city of Porto.
