The Comptroller of Peru has reported that the deterioration at Machu Picchu is due to tourist overload, with more than 92,000 people entering the site between 2024 and 2025. According to the agency, the entry of school groups and local tourists was not counted as part of the maximum permitted capacity in the historic sanctuary.

Authorities at the monument warned that this situation has led to progressive deterioration of Machu Picchu's infrastructure and conservation. The Comptroller emphasized the need to review and regulate access to the monument to prevent greater impact on its integrity.
