The 55th Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting is set to begin in Koror, Palau, on Monday night. This meeting is particularly noteworthy as Palau is one of the few Pacific island nations maintaining diplomatic ties with Taiwan, amid ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan.

However, the meeting is experiencing disruptions as several leaders have canceled their appearances. Notably, the Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, Matthew Wale, withdrew following a no-confidence motion instigated by the home affairs minister, Manasseh Maelanga. In addition to Wale, leaders from Fiji, Vanuatu, and Samoa have also pulled out of the summit at the last moment.

The changes in attendance are raising concerns about the stability of discussions at the forum. Participants are expected to address pressing regional issues, including security and climate change, while balancing the complex geopolitical landscape.

The Pacific Islands Forum is regarded as a significant platform for regional cooperation. This year's summit is anticipated to be especially charged politically, given the current diplomatic strains in the region and the last-minute withdrawals.
