The Government of Panama declared a national state of emergency on Tuesday in response to the effects of the climate phenomenon El Niño. The decision was approved by the Cabinet Council with the aim of strengthening institutional response to adverse weather conditions, which include both excessive rainfall in some areas and droughts in others.

Panamanian authorities anticipate that the situation of precipitation deficits could persist until March 2027. This dry period affects not only agriculture but also the Panama Canal, which has already announced a reduction in ship traffic from 36 to 34 transits per day, starting September 3.

In addition to Panama, El Salvador is also suffering severe consequences. The country has imposed a maximum alert level due to the drought that has impacted crops. Salvadoran Civil Protection reported that significant losses are expected, with an anticipated 20% reduction in the first cereal harvest.

The effects of El Niño have been felt throughout Central America, a region facing a "dry corridor," where extreme weather conditions require exceptional administrative measures. Responses to this climate crisis vary among the affected countries, but the urgency of action remains a constant.

The declaration of a state of emergency in Panama coincides with an attempt to manage the situation alongside local and international institutions that can offer logistical and financial support. The country is preparing to implement measures aimed at mitigating the effects of these adverse weather conditions on the population and the economy.

The situation in Panama and El Salvador highlights the need for a coordinated approach to natural disaster management in the region, as phenomena like El Niño significantly impact water resources and agricultural production, essential for the livelihoods of many communities. The Government of Panama, along with other regional authorities, continues to monitor the evolution of the situation.
